I hate those guys out there in the water that don't wear a leash when they surf. What's the purpose? Do they really think they are the next Kelly Slater or something? Is the leash slowing them down that much, or is it so much of a hassle to attach it? Are they so cheap as to avoid the purchase? What's up?
IF they were the next Kelly Slater, I'd assume that they are good enough to catch a casual wave, kick out at the end, and maintain absolute control throughout the entire session. I have no problem with that. BUT.....if they really want to be the next Kelly Slater, wouldn't they be pushing their limits on every wave, to the point that they are at least a little out of control. If that's the case, they should have a leash for a couple reasons:
One, when they wipe-out (and they should, if they are pushing their limits), they wouldn't have to swim so far to get their board back. That just means more waves on which to perfect their surfing.
Two, if the leash slows them down, wouldn't that "resistance" naturally make them better? And, yes...even (& especially) when there is a ton of seaweed in the water.
Three, Professional athletes typically stretch a little before practice. If they want to be the next King of Surfing, they should be stretching at least a little before entering the water. Perfect time to attach the leash to your leg.
Four, if they're so cheap as to avoid the purchase, hell, you're good enough, have your sponsor donate one to you.
Five, it's still a safety issue for others in the water.
Now....If they are NOT the next K.S., especially because they are surfing the junky waves of the Gulf Coast, then they're just being stupid.
Either way, WEAR YOUR DAMN LEASH!!!
